As of early Friday morning, Shelby experienced winds up to 90 miles per hour. The National Weather Association did not confirm any tornado touch downs, but the city of Shelby bore the brunt of this high wind on the first day of November.
John Ensman, Utility Director for the City of Shelby reported that a straight-line wind gusted through a 1/2 mile portion of the city starting at Fox Run subdivision to the city’s #2 Reservoir.
High winds caused significant damaged to utility poles on Mansfield Avenue. “The cause of the power outage was due to three broken utility poles in front of Cornell’s IGA building,” said Ensman.
Mansfield Avenue was close for a portion of the day, but as of 3:20 p.m., is now open.
The circuit damaged by the storm supports 15 percent of the city’s power, which affects approximately 500 customers.
The rare winds put Shelby out of power from 12:49 a.m. until 9:07 a.m. Friday morning.
Ensman said that the repairs have since been completed for the damage was largely contained to three poles and numerous service lines to homes.
