Donations and federal grants were accepted by the Shelby Board of Education on Thursday evening. Superintendent, Tim Tarvin gave an update on the current high school and the demolition of the Shelby Middle School. Family, Community, Career Leaders of America FCCLA trips were approved and the board approved participating in the Ohio Performance Assessment Pilot Project by accepting a state grant worth $24,000 towards the program.

The Athletic Boosters made two donations worth sizeable amounts towards Shelby City Schools. One donation worth $10,000 for gym display boards and another donation for $4,334 for one-third of the sports medicine contract. “We are very grateful to the Athletic Boosters. I don’t think we could ever mention them enough for what they do for our district and for our kids,” said Tarvin.

“The Board echoes Mr. Tarvin. The Athletic Boosters are always giving back and we thank them for all the hard work they do,” added Board President, Bruce Briggs, Jr. The Gimbel Foundation donated $1,000 towards band uniforms. 

The Board of Education accepted federal grants for Title I for $410,985, Title IIA for $76,790, IDEA for $438,002, and RttT for $41,575. 

Tarvin gave an update on the current high school. “We are bringing the chapter to a close and we have built a lot of good relationships with the people who have helped work on this building. However, it is time to move on from that chapter. The auxiliary gym is still waiting on the permit for us to occupy. We are close on getting it opened and the facility looks great,” said Tarvin. 

 “If you have driven by the middle school you will notice it is rapidly coming down. It’s a landmark in this community and everyone that has went to school here has gone through that building. We are getting bricks from the building and we will hold onto them. We will have plenty of bricks to possibly sell for memoriam of the building,” said Tarvin.

The board also approved FCCLA field trips to Columbus, Ohio on April 16-18, 2014 and to Omaha, Nebraska on November 22-24, 2013.. And the Board approved a resolution that would allow participation in the Ohio Performance Assessment Pilot Project. A state grant was accepted of $24,000 towards the program.
