Ontario Local Schools is partnering with Weirich Waste to provide a monthly recycling program at the Stingel Elementary parking lot.
The proceeds of the program will be split 50/50 between Weirich Waste and Stingel Elementary.
Stingel Principal Mike Ream stated, “It’s a win-win for everyone. Stingel’s portion of the funds will benefit the new guided reading program that is through Fountas and Pinnell. We’re expanding our library quite a bit, so the funds will go toward that. Plus, the program helps promote the Weirich Waste business, so everyone wins.”
Through this partnership, Weirich Waste has agreed to set up and provide recycling bins in the elementary parking lot once per month from September – May, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Additionally, Weirich Waste will staff the recycling nights and haul all of the recyclables to the recycling facility.
Kevin Weirich, owner of Weirich Waste, stated, “Recycling is the easiest thing to do to help preserve our environment. We are proud to be able to support Ontario Local Schools by lending a hand with their monthly recycle day drop-offs.”
Ontario students, staff, and parents are welcome to volunteer during the recycling nights. Students who wish to volunteer need to be accompanied and supervised at all times by their parents, explained Ream.
Acceptable recyclables include newspaper, white paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans, tin cans, old electronics, old appliances, scrap metal, and new and used books for Elizabeth’s Book Drive.
The first recycling night occurred on Sept. 19. Ream reported that 240 pounds of sheet iron, 34 pounds of newspaper, 24 tin cans, and 28 aluminum cans were recycled. The school profited $31.
“The first night went well,” said Ream. “I think the parents really appreciated it, too.”
