“An important role for parents and caregivers is to teach children about pedestrian safety and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to school each day and the health and environmental risks related to physical inactivity and air pollution,”said Butler Mayor Kevin Carr as he read from an official proclamation placed before the council members at Monday’s Butler village council meeting.

The proclamation calls for the week of October 21, 2013 to be proclaimed “Bike to School Week” in hopes to encourage village residents to consider the safety and health of children.

Carr added that the proclamation noted that the lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other health problems among children. The encouragement to walk to school builds physical activity into children’s daily routine.

As part of the proclamation, October 22 is designated “Walk to School” day. Children, parents and community leaders will join together that morning at 7:30 a.m. to walk to school and evaluate walking conditions in the community.

“I just want to let everyone know that we will be meeting a three designated spots to walk in support of the proclamtion. Richland Bank, Three Crosses and also New Life Church. We will meet at 7:30 a.m. and begin walking at 7:40 a.m.,”said Stover.

Mayor Carr informed council that the issues with leaf blower had been resolved and that leaf pick-up would begin as time and weather permits and continuing until or around the Thanksgiving holiday.
