Tim Harless of Richland County Children Services spoke to council regarding the levy for the election in November. The council also saw Councilman Garland John Gates give an update on the Community and Economic Development Committee. Finally, Mayor Marilyn John recognized Farmer’s Market coordinator David Ernst for his hard work to make the market a success.

Harless provided council with some information on what Richland County Children Services performs and what the levy will benefit.

“I am an employee of Richland County Children Services and I am here to talk to you about what we do at Children Services for families and children in Richland County. We are often first responders with a pen and tablet and we are intervening in people’s lives. Those of you know that there are drug issues out there and the economy is suffering and those that usually suffer the most are our most precious commodity, our children,” said Harless.

“All I can say to you is that the 107 that are employed put forth their effort daily to assist a child and I am asking for your support on November 5. We do have a replacement levy on the ballot and we are not asking for new millage, we are asking for one mill. It was originally passed in 1984. I want to thank all of you for allowing me to speak,” Harless continued.

Councilman Gates updated council on the Community and Economic Development Committee. “We talked about the work that is underway at North Central State College at the Shelby campus for the conference center. It’s been long awaited and it is now underway. I noticed all the events that have been held at the Shelby campus and that should only continue to grow.

“The farmer’s market had a very successful year and this past Saturday wrapped it up. It also included the Chili Cook Off that was sponsored by the Shelby Area Business Group and there were 18 chilis, six of which were made by culinary art students at Pioneer Career and Technology Center,” said Gates.

Despite the hard rain that occurred right when the cook off was about to begin, a lot of people stayed down and participated in the event,” said Gates. “Marvin Memorial Library has been very proactive to reaching out to schools providing resources to not only students, but parents as well,” said Gates.

Mayor John thanked the coordinator of the farmer’s market, David Ernst. “I want to give a huge thank you to David Ernst. He went beyond anything we have seen in the past with the farmer’s market. I don’t travel to a lot of other farmer’s market, but I have been told it is one of the best in the area,” said John.

Community and Economic Development Coordinator, Christina Thompson, added that Shelby will expand trick or treat on October 26. “We are expanding our Halloween on October 26 to include downtown trick or treat following the parade. That will be in addition to the trick or treat that will take place from 6-7 p.m. I also want to thank Carolyn Clarke for her hard work with the Chili Cook Off,” said Thompson.

In legislation, council approved ordinance number 35. The ordinance amends ordinance number 10 with annual appropriations. Council also passed resolution number 34. The resolution deals with submitting an application to partake in the Ohio Public Works Commission State Capital Improvement and local improvement with transportation programs.

“All I can say to you is that the 107 that are employed put forth their effort daily to assist a child and I am asking for your support on November 5. We do have a replacement levy on the ballot and we are not asking for new millage, we are asking for one mill. It was originally passed in 1984,” Tim Harless said of the Children’s Services levy.
