The Beach has made a home in Shelby. Owners, Brenda Schraedly and Lisa Humphrey, started a business that provides a sunless, custom air brush tan.

After being diagnosed with melanoma two years ago, Schraedly wanted to find a way to develop a healthy, natural glow.  “I loved being in the sun and after I found out I had melanoma it was devastating. I liked to tan and have color and I just kept thinking what am I going to do now. I had to change my lifestyle completely,” said Schraedly.

Upon Schraedly’s diagnosis, her daughter quit tanning as well. “My daughter lives up around Toledo and she found a woman at her gym that would give spray tans. She decided to give it a try because she had quit tanning when I got diagnosed. She told me I had to come up and try it out because I would just love it. After I tried it, I thought that we should start a business so I called Lisa and asked her if she wanted to join with me and she jumped on board,” said Schraedly. Humphrey is Schraedly’s sister-in-law.

Humphrey’s family has stopped tanning, too. She also has family members that have been diagnosed with melanoma and they are currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for the disease.

“The fun part about this is seeing the reaction from people afterwards. People look and see how tan they are after the spraying is completed and they just love it. We want to make people feel good,” said Schraedly.  The Beach is opened and in order to receive a custom air brush tan, an appointment is required. “All of the sprays that we use are organic. We wanted to find the best spray and one that we liked. This is a very healthy alternative and we are the only people in town who offer this,” said Schraedly. Schraedly added that both of the ladies’ dermatologists love the idea of spray tans.

“We are looking at your skin and we want to make it look as perfect as we can. I want to make people feel comfortable. I want them to have a natural look that best suits them,” said Schraedly. In order to receive a custom air brush tan, the client’s skin must be prepared. “You have to prepare your skin by exfoliating and make sure that there is no lotion on your body. Wear dark clothing that is loosely fitted. The tan will last from seven to ten days, but it just depends on the person’s skin tone. You will also want to wait eight hours before you shower after you have received the tan,” said Schraedly.

“We offer different levels of sprays that will best suit them. We help them pick out the color that will best suit their tone. Clients can make appointments by contacting either Lisa or I. Lisa will also travel around to perform spray tanning for any occasion,” said Schraedly. Humphrey will charge for the mileage during traveling and her slogan for travel tanning is TB2G. Humphrey added that men enjoy the spray tan also.

“For a single session the price is $30, for three sessions it is $60, and five sessions for $90. We will also do specials throughout the year with homecoming and proms,” said Schraedly.
