Shelby Health Department is forming a team to participate in bringing awareness to breast cancer and keeping the community involved in walking during the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that will take place in Mansfield on October 19.

The name of the team is Shelby’s Pink Ladies. “To kick off our team we are having an event downtown on Monday, Sept. 9, which will be a free half-hour zumba class. The class will begin at 7 p.m. and registration is at 6:30 p.m.,” said Community and Economic Development Coordinator, Christina Thompson.

“We will be selling t-shirts for $20 to collect donations for our team to give to Making Strides. We will be registering people if they would like to walk with us,” said Thompson. Joining or donating to the fundraiser will take place on the green at the corner of West Main Street and Blackfork Circle in Downtown Shelby.

“We want to keep the community walking and we felt this could be something good to get involved in. It is completely open to the public and we encourage both men and women to come and join our walking group,” said Thompson.

Making Strides will be coming to Mansfield for the second year, but this will be the first year that Shelby’s Pink Ladies will be participating. “We have had a steady walking program with about 20-25 participating in the walks every week. We thought this would be a good way to bring some of them to walk on a different day and we want to help create a healthy community,” said Thompson.

“We want to appear as a team and have the community come together. We have a strong running and walking community and it would be great to show other communities that we have this strong walking group here in Shelby. People can donate online or join our team at www.makingstrides.acsevents.org,” said Thompson.

A table will be set up at the Shelby Farmer’s Market on September 14 for the community to register or donate towards the team. T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the Coolest Shop in Town located at 57 West Main Street. The donations will go directly towards Making Strides fundraising.

To join or support the Shelby Pink Ladies team, go to makingstrides.acsevents.org or stop by the team’s table at the weekly Shelby Farmers Market beginning September 21.

Donations can be made at Shelby City Hall and the Shelby Utilities Office.
