Listen for the “Super hero” theme music this season from Plymouth’s Big Red marching band. The jazziness of “Spiderman” will also be played at some of the upcoming events in Shiloh and Plymouth this summer.
At the Shiloh Ox Roast, the marching band paraded through the festivities. They also perform at the Plymouth Fireman’s and Silver King Festival.
“I like to present the band with themes a bit, but also with a teachable history,” Plymouth-Shiloh band director Ben Meisel stated. “For example, I’m teaching the history of composer John Williams.”
This is Meisel’s fourth year teaching music and marching band here at Plymouth-Shiloh schools. He’s a graduate of The Ohio State University and originally from Reynoldsburg.
“I enjoy it here. It’s friendly, and I’ve kept traditions,” he said. Meisel said he exposes the band to a wide variety of musical styles as well. “Each year we get a little better.”
This year, Plymouth;s marching band is absent of seniors, so it is a younger band. But they’re hardworking and motivated, according to Meisel.
James Linstrum on trombone is carrying the section by himself. “There’s another trombonist, but he won’t be here until concert band,” said Linstrum. Listen for his sole trombone contribution in the brass section, during The Beatles’ classic song “Twist and Shout”.
The Plymouth Big Red marching band will also be playing this summer at the Ashland County Fair ‘Parade of Bands’ on September 15.
