Inspired by the very families they provide care for and the caregivers themselves, Mid-Ohio Home Health (MHHH) has teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association to bring awareness and support to families affected by Alzheimer’s. The first annual 5K Walk & Run for Alzheimer’s hosted by MOHHC is scheduled for Saturday, July 27.

The walk/race begins at 9 a.m. with an 8 a.m. registration time.

“We wanted to do something for the community,” stated Leo Hess, Mid-Ohio Home Health. “We wanted to do something directly with those affected by Alzheimers.”

“Alzheime’s affects everyone in the family,” said Marilyn Weirick of Mansfield. Weirick spoke of her family’s experience with the disease that affected her husband Joe Weirick about 4-5 years ago.

“The very first thing I would say to a family that may be dealing with a loved one affected by Alzheimer’s is that there is help and that the whole family needs to participate, have a family meeting because support is so very important,” she said.

Added Weirick,”You don’t realize how much help you need when you have a loved one affected. Trust, and a dependable, caring support system is vital.”

“I don’t know what I would have done without the help of a caregiver and the support of my family,” said Weirick. “Support groups are very important too. You are with people who understand what you are going through.” Weirick recalled the tremendous impact the support group she attended once a month had in providing her with information and easing the isolation commonly felt by families dealing with the disease.

“Alzheimer’s is a good cause to support and raise money for,” Hess stated. “It fits what we do and what the community needs.” “Everybody involved is on board with the goal.” Part of that goal is to see the race become an annual event, to raise awareness and possibly increase funding.

Hess along with Kristine Gayle of the Alzheimer’s Association will speak at the upcoming event providing information on the sixth leading cause of death. Following the race there will be an awards ceremony and refreshments will be provided.

Proceeds of the event will benefit local families affected by Alzheimer’s.
