Duane Bradley Callender has been appointed as principal for Mansfield Senior High School. He was recommended by Brian Gaverick, the previous principal and now superintendent, and voted on in the Mansfield Board of Education meeting on July 22.

Callender, 47, currently lives in Wooster with his wife and five sons. His contract will start his position on August 1 last for the next three years.

Callender is a veteran in education. In coming to Mansfield, he leaves his post as supervisor with Buckeye Career Center. He graduated high school from Perrysburg in 1984, and is an alum of Ashland University and Bowling Green University. He was also an assistant principal at John Simpson during its last year of operation.

“I love Mansfield. Always have. There are wonderful opportunities here,” said Callender. “There are lots of challenges in education, but my main goal is to increase achievement,” he continued.

When asked his first order of business, he replied, “I am going to sit and listen. And look. And listen some more.”

Garverick said, “I am very confident in our choice with him. His drive and goal to academic achievement is very strong. His background with career tech will help him succeed and help our school because we’re a comprehensive school with many career tech programs.”

Callender, according to superintendent Garverick, has been wanting to rejoin Mansfield’s community since John Simpson’s closing in 2007.
