Pastor Jerry Laudermilk, the lead pastor at Abundant Life Tabernacle, worked with other churches and local ministries to identify needs in the community. He then met those needs with the help of participating churches in the community.
This weekend marked the inaugural event “Light Our City” event Community evangelical churches banded together to execute different service projects around Mansfield. Volunteers came despite rainy weather at the downtown gazebo in Mansfield at 9 a.m.
The group recited a prayer under the shelter, then church teams dispersed around the city. Some churches were involved in improving landscape in parks. Some were sent to landscape different yards of organizations like Richland Pregnancy Services, and Harmony House. Others helped in cleaning 4th Street.
A group from Ontario Christian Fellowship (OCF) convened at Richland Pregnancy Services to clean up the overgrown and unkempt yard. Pastor Kim Maurer, Pastor Tim Schlatter, Daniel Gregg, Ruth Maurer and Karen Schlatter were a part, and were pitching in despite the weather.
“The rain kept some kids from coming out, but we’re still here. And we’ll participate next year,” said Pastor Schlatter as he pulled weeds and dead plants from the wet ground.
Another larger group, one represented by five churches and ministries, met out at Prospect Park in Mansfield to replace broken swings and lay rubber mulch. They also installed one new Handicap Accessible (HAC) swing. The group trimmed and pruned overgrown weeds around the park’s boundaries.
Because of the rain, some of the events were moved to a different time. This new time will be Saturday, August 3.
