“There are about 30 of us all together from the different churches going around the city helping out with different projects,” said Josh Harpold, youth pastor at Core Community Church.

Core Community Church, First Church of God, and Shelby Alliance Church youth groups are lending a hand to the community in Shelby this week.

Harpold and youth group members were in downtown Shelby helping Connie Roub, owner of Connie’s Place on West Main Street, clean up her after recent flooding.

Roub said, “They have been a huge help. They have helped clean up so much of the basement and I am grateful they wanted to help with this process.” Connie’s Place is located near the Black Fork River, which makes the location vulnerable to flood damage.

“Hearing that water rushing into the basement and watching it gradually rise was the worst feeling. Roub said, “You can’t do anything when it happens and you feel helpless.”

Members of the Core Youth Group were helping Roub by pressure washing the basement to finish the clean up. They were in the basement of the store cleaning both Monday and Tuesday.

The three different youth groups will be traveling around Shelby to help with a new sidewalk on Broadway Street and a Home Depot remodeling project on North Gamble Street. The groups will also be cleaning downtown Shelby streets and businesses from the effects of the flood.
