History repeated itself at the latest board meeting of the Crestview Local School District. In fiscal year 2012, Treasurer Christina Bennett reported that the district’s General Fund shows a $172,098 surplus.
The report continues a trend spanning 18 years. In 15 of 18 years, the district has balanced its General Fund budget and implemented a total of $1,417,000 in cost saving measures.
“Overall, I would say that the financial health of this district is very strong.” said Bennet. She also publicly commended the board for setting financial goals and meeting or exceeding each financial goal.
Crestview’s fiscal year was not one short of challenges. State foundation receipts decreased by $208,000 due to loss of EdJobs revenue. Total receipts showed a $183,340 decrease. Finally, the board addressed a $304,446 deficit spending in the same fiscal year.
The report also stated that “Cost Reduction in non-instructional areas are preferred so not to negatively impact the education provided to our students.” In fiscal year 2012, spending for salaries and wages, and supplies and materials saw increases of $22,000 and $8,000 respectively. The biggest area of savings was in purchased services at a difference of $178,000.
One board member said that the key to navigating these challenges was as simple as it was apparent. “I don’t care what you run, if you spend less than you take in, you will balance the budget,” said Bill Bolin.
The board also moved to accept a number of recommendations from Superintendent Scott Will. The recommendations included two significant additions: Google Chromebooks and a new high school principal.
In the classrooms, students in grades 6 -12 will see the introduction of Google Chromebooks. To Superintendent Scott Will, that means an additional tool for the district’s curriculum.
“[Online Technology] is something that our kids are immersed into everyday,” Will said, “This is something that teachers can meet them where they’re at, and put the education plug in an show them how to effectively use it; not just for social networking activities but for their education.” Will also anticipates students bringing content from outside the classroom in order to solidify existing curriculum.
The July meeting saw the district approve Shannon Sharp as High School Principal. She comes to the district from an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director post at Loudonville High School. “We’re really excited to have her aboard, and the High School staff will be anticipating her leadership as the year gets started.” Will stated.
The board accepted the resignation of Rob Gross as Middle and High School Intervention Specialist and Varsity Baseball Coach. He will move on to an administrative position at Mt. Vernon City Schools.
The board moved their next meeting up from its normal third Monday of the month, and will re-convene on August 13.
