In 1886, when the Bissman Building was built, there was a railroad spur from the B&O Railroad that brought freight cars nearly to their back door. The company began as an importer and wholesaler of groceries and produce. In the ensuing decades, the building was a center of exporting as well. Products with the Bissman label, like cigars, teas, coffees and nuts, shipped out to destinations all over the country.
