Shelby City Council was in session Monday, June 17th. A member of the park board thanked the city for their help with enhancing the parks for the community. The council also addressed issues that were before them and took the necessary steps in keeping the community of Shelby looking bright.

The first item on the agenda was Jen Walter. Walter was present at the meeting on behalf of the park board. She thanked the city for all their hard work and help with additions to the park. “We have had a lot of city employees helping out with various projects in the park and we truly appreciate that,” she said. The first item Walter addressed was the makeover of the pool.

She said, “We have a lot of fresh paint, new umbrellas, and there is new plumbing in the bathrooms. We have made a lot of nice maintenance changes to the pool.” Swimming lessons are also being offered and last week there were 25 kids that registered. Walter said, “It’s been a nice opportunity for kids to learn how to swim.” Seltzer Pool will also be holding a community event on July 11.

Along with activities around the pool, science camp takes place next week. The camp has a waiting list and full of eager students ready to engage their minds. Walter recognized the community members regarding the drive for the downtown park. She said, “We are thrilled to see that moving in a positive direction for the community and we appreciate the community stepping up to help with that project.”

Another issue that council discussed was the reservoirs in Shelby. The reservoirs are hot spots for members of the community. One topic that was mentioned was the possibility of ice fishing. Mayor Marilyn John also pointed out maintaining clean reservoirs was important for continued community enjoyment. Finally, maintenance efforts will include mosquito spraying this summer.

The Justice Center building, currently under construction, has received a lot of steel for the roof and it is hoped that it will be completed by August 2nd. Project Coordinator, Joseph Gies, said, “At that point they will really be able to get to work on the inside.”
