MANSFIELD -- Two people were killed Monday afternoon in an ATV accident that closed U.S. 30 westbound between Fifth Avenue and Ohio 545, according to Mansfield police.
At 4:47 p.m., police responded to an accident report and are investigating the cause. Police said identities of the victims are not known at this time.
The all-terrain vehicle was traveling on the ridge above the highway when it fell down on U.S. 30, landing upside down on the road, according to authorities.
In an e-mail, Mansfield Safety-Service Director Lori A. Cope said U.S. 30 westbound is closed and all traffic is being rerouted onto 5th Avenue while the accident is under investigation.
She said the the public is asked to avoid the area.
The crash is being investigated by Mansfield police, assisted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Richland County Sheriff's Office, the Madison Township Fire Department and the Mansfield Fire Department.
Further details regarding the accident and the investigation will be released at a later time, police said.
