Scott J. Hancock, age 90, life-long resident of Shelby, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2026, at his home.
Scott was born on April 1, 1935, to the late Winfield and Helen (Laser) Hancock. He graduated from Shelby High School in the class of 1953. The following year, he began working with his father at Hancock Insurance Agency and Real Estate. After several years, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Following his military service, Scott returned to Shelby and eventually became co-owner and operator of the family business with his brother, John Hancock. Together, they dedicated over 60 years to serving local families before his retirement.
Scott was never one to shy away from getting involved. He served on the Red Cross Board of Directors and dedicated many years as Treasurer of the Shelby Chamber of Commerce. He was also a long-time member of the Shelby Eagles. While his hobbies were few, they always centered around the water. He could often be found on Lake Erie, enjoying time on his boat, fishing or jet skiing with family.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann (Jeff) Clinger of Upper Sandusky, OH; one grandson, Jayson (Lauren) Clinger of Oregon, OH; one brother, John Hancock of Shelby, as well as his former wife, Donna Caris of Wellington, OH, and many other relatives; including his companion cat, Mr. Fluff.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Eleanor Lynn Hancock, in 1989.
Friends and family may visit at Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, March 23, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor David Sipes officiating. Interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
