MANSFIELD — The Richland Carrousel will be quiet for a few weeks this winter.
From Dec. 29 through Jan. 22, the familiar music will pause as the downtown Mansfield landmark undergoes a focused restoration effort — work designed to ensure the ride remains vibrant and welcoming for years to come.
The temporary closure is intentional. Rather than waiting for wear to take its toll, the nonprofit organization behind the carrousel is using the winter window to refresh key elements — from the vivid colors of the hand-carved figures to polished brass poles, updated lighting and exterior details.
When the Richland Carrousel reopens Thursday, Jan. 22, visitors will be greeted by a renewed version of an experience deeply rooted in Mansfield’s identity.
That investment carries added weight given the carrousel’s history.
When it opened on Aug. 30, 1991, it became the first new, hand-carved carrousel built and operated in the United States since the 1930s. More than $1.25 million in privately raised funds made the project possible, establishing it as a centerpiece of downtown redevelopment and a symbol of community-driven revitalization.
Craftsmanship has always been central to that mission. All 52 figures were designed, carved and painted by Carousel Works of Mansfield in the style of early 1900s master carver G.A. Dentzel. A Stinson Band Organ, built in Bellefontaine, Ohio, provides the music, while scenery panels circling the ride depict Mansfield landmarks, past and present.
The brief closure is a pause, not an interruption.
When the carrousel begins turning again in late January, it will do so with renewed energy — ready to welcome families, visitors, and longtime residents back downtown.
