Jim Stine, age 97, a lifelong Shelby resident, died early Thursday morning, December 18, 2025 at his home.

Jim was born February 28, 1928 in Shelby, the son of the late Otto and Teresa (Metzger) Stine. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1946 and subsequently served his country in the United States Navy and Naval Aviation from 1946-1948.

Jim married Marjorie Ann Stroup on May 16, 1950 and together they raised five children who survive: Gary (Laura) Stine, Craig Stine, Laurie (Phil) Korbas, Sally (Dan) Biglin, and Brent (Susan) Stine. Together they celebrated 33 years of marriage prior to Marge’s passing on December 28, 1983 at the age of 55.  On May 16, 1987, Jim married again to the former Shirley P. (Amstutz) Burky, his wife of 38 years, who survives along with her daughter, Kay (Jeff) Green.

Jim was well known for his talents in construction and carpentry. It not only was his work, but also a passion he carried with him throughout his entire life. One of his greatest pastimes was working in his shop in addition to golfing and bowling. Jim was a founding member of the Shelby Little League in 1953 and umpired for many years after. He also thoroughly enjoyed traveling and the 27 years he and Shirley wintered in Vero Beach, FL. A lifelong Catholic, Jim had been a member at both Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement and Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Shelby. Additionally, he was a member of the Shelby Knight of Columbus.

Together, Jim and Shirley’s family consists of their children; grandchildren: Jason (Erin) Stine, Matthew (Bonnie) Stine, Brandon Stine, Adam (Laura) Stine, Aaron (Jackie) Stine, Ashley Korbas, Brad (Eliana) Korbas, Lee (Nikki) Biglin, Kali Biglin, Jena Biglin, Logan (Casey) Stine, Caleb (Lincoln) Stine, Leslie (Carlos) Rodriguez, Chet (Barb) Green, Tiffany (Matt) Brockett, and Ryan (Megan) Ward;  numerous great grandchildren: son-in-law: Dick Ward; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends too numerous to count.

Jim was the last surviving child of Otto and Teresa. In addition to his parents and wife, Marge, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Sabina Rice, Janet Yetzer, Mary Houpt, Darwin Stine, Marlene Misamore, and Charlotte Auer; and Shirley’s daughters: Sandra Burky and Cindy Ward.

Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, December 21, 2025 from 2-5 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a rosary will be recited at 5 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 22, 2025 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5741 State Route 61, Shelby. Fr. Jeff Smith will celebrate the mass. Burial will follow in the church cemetery beside his first wife, Marge.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
