Harold Eugene McQuillen, fondly known as “Mac” or “Couch” to family and friends, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 8, 2025, at the age of 94. He was born into a large family in Mansfield on April 29, 1931, the son of Earl McKinley and Martha Blanche (Deviney) McQuillen.

Harold was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Great Lakes in Milwaukee, when he met his future wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Grieber. Marrying in 1958, they eventually moved to his hometown of Mansfield, where he became Assistant Fire Chief and the Road Superintendent of Madison Township, followed by a craft business that he and his wife built up for over twenty years. He was often seen wearing his straw hat and Santa-like beard, while making small wooden animals on a peddle scroll-saw at many well-known craft shows.

Over the years, Harold enjoyed playing cards with his family and his Euchre groups, as well as going hunting and fishing. At various points in his early life and being very athletic, he played basketball and some semi-pro football. He coached several youth baseball teams when his sons were younger.

Surviving him are two of his sisters, Billie Urie and Kay Scodova. He loved all his family, especially his sisters, and met with them (and often other family members joining in) every week for “Thursday lunch”.

He is also survived by his children: Connie Lotfi, Judee (Gary) Button, John H. (Wendy) McQuillen, and Jeff (Traci) McQuillen; his daughter-in-law, Patty McQuillen; his grandchildren Amy (Ben) McGuire, Courtney Lotfi, Chad (Ebby) Dedeaux, Chrissy Dedeaux, Michael (Jessica) McQuillen, Brittney Pennywitt, Kieyra (Rodney) Thrush, Andrew (Alyssa) McQuillen, Morgen (Alivia) McQuillen, Brian McQuillen, and David McQuillen; eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren who will all miss “Papa Mac”.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie McQuillen; his sons, Gary McQuillen and Jerry McQuillen; his nephew and hunting buddy, Robert “Butch” McQuillen; his great-grandson, Brody Thrush; and his siblings, Earl J. McQuillen, Dorothy Stadler, Eileen Mihalick, Eva Michener, JoAnn Cheney, John M. McQuillen, Edward McQuillen, and infants Leslie McQuillen and Donna McQuillen.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield. A celebration of Harold’s life will follow at 5:30 pm at the funeral home.
