Donald “Benny” Bennett Bowman, age 68, of Shelby, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Crestwood Care Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Benny was born on August 27, 1957, to the late Donald W. Bowman and Glenda Jane (Ratliff) Cooper in Portsmouth, Ohio. He and his family moved to Shelby from Kentucky when he was in the 7th grade.
He retired from General Electric in Bucyrus, Ohio. Benny was passionate about dirt track sprint car racing. He spent many years at the track racing in his youth and continued to enjoy watching it as he aged. As a sports fan he particularly enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in their many athletic endeavors. He was very proud of their many athletic accomplishments.
He is survived by his three children, Heather (Joel) Henkel, Brad (Emily) Bowman, and Matt (Kelly) Bowman all of Shelby; his grandchildren, Caleb, Connor, and Madison Henkel, Blaine, Ava, Brady, Kendall, and Karlie Bowman; one great-grandchild, Navy Henkel; his siblings: Rhonda Sampsel of Mansfield, Ohio, and Lori Thompson and Kathy Keeney both of Kentucky; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Benny was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Bowman and “adopted” parents Roger & Alice Hopton.
Per his request, there will be no services observed at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in Benny’s honor to the Shelby Athletic Boosters in care of Cathy Dodge at 145 Mansfield Ave. Apt 7, Shelby, OH 44875.
