MANSFIELD — When Dr. Shirley Heck and Margaret Black came together to plan what education could look like in Mansfield, they had a vision for students learning through action, impacting the community, and taking the classroom from rows of desks to dynamic, individualized education.

Over the last half century, the school has grown from its days in borrowed rooms to its own campus of two buildings located on 40 acres of woods, having served hundreds of students and families seeking a unique educational experience.

This weekend, alumni, former staff, board members, and friends of the school will come together to reminisce and reflect. Friday night there will be a gathering for all at the Phoenix Brewing Company for a Happy Hour starting at 6 p.m. to kick off the celebration.

Saturday night brings the showcase event of the weekend, the 50th Anniversary Gala held at Snow Trails.

This event will feature dinner, historic displays, a cash bar, and more. Tickets are still available for $25 per person; they can be purchased at https://givebutter.com/Discovery50.

On Sunday, the school will open its doors to all for a walk down memory lane with a glimpse into the future.

The open house will run from noon to 3 p.m. with artefacts from the past, projects from present students, and information on Discovery’s plan to continue growing and learning into the future.
