MANSFIELD — New recreational equipment at Central Park will allow children to tap into their musical interests.

Three different types of musical instruments — xylophones, chimes and drums — replaced wooden playground equipment that was installed in the mid-1980s, according to Mark Abrams, parks department manager.

This addition is new to the Mansfield parks system.

“It’s something different and unique,” Abrams said. “With the Brown Bag Concerts that are held downtown, we thought this would fit that theme.”

The project is meant to help enhance not only the park, but the community as a whole, said Safety-Service Director Lori Cope.

“We want to help promote the arts in downtown Mansfield and felt like this was a good way to get younger people involved,” Cope said.

She noted that schools oftentimes don’t have the funds to spend on equipment such as that, so the instruments will help provide an outlet for children to foster an interest in the arts.

The instruments were purchased through the state bidding process from the Penchura Company in Brighton, Michigan — a recreation products and services provider.

PRIDE funds are being used to pay for the $23,000 project.
