SHELBY — Students at Shelby High School want their peers to know the dangers of distracted driving.
Members of the school’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America student organization hosted an event Thursday to help raise awareness of these dangers through interactive activities.
Weeks prior to the event, students created one-of-a-kind cars out of cardboard boxes donated by Shelby’s Carton Service.
Each of these boxes were turned into vehicles, such as the Batmobile, a school bus, Lightning McQueen and the Mystery Machine.
Staff at Shelby voted on its four top designs, which earned the privilege of participating in a race around the high school gymnasium.

On Thursday, all high school students attended an assembly where students raced their box cars around the gym.
Each lap of the race was completed by a different student. Each student had to complete a different task that is distracting to drivers. Tasks included eating, makeup and hair, texting and drunk driving.
Students had a blast watching their peers work their way through the “Mario Kart” inspired race track, which even included banana spin-outs and lightning bolts.
The assembly concluded with a truly powerful message from school resource officer Hannah Hall.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was also a part of the assembly.
