MANSFIELD — The 27th episode of the News Man Weekly podcast has dropped on Christmas Eve.
In this week’s edition, Richland Source City Editor Carl Hunnell is rejoined by former Mansfield police Chief Phil Messer, who served in the MPD for 34 years, the last eight as chief, before retiring in 2010.
In part one of their chat last week, Messer talked about helping to found and grow the METRICH Enforcement Unit during his years on the force as well as some of the cases he will never forget.
In part two, Messer recalls some of the wilder moments on the MPD, including the response he led to the violent strike at Ideal Electric in 1990, as well as undercover drug work and some of the interesting characters he met along the way.

Hunnell is also joined by Executive Producer Zac Hiser and videographer Grant Ritchey to talk about their Christmas plans.
Hunnell also recites a humorous tribute to moms and dads he found on the internet about what it takes to make sure children are happy on Christmas morning, titled “Some Assembly Required.”
