Jean Arlene (Creager Dalzell) McVicar passed peacefully on December 3, 2024. Jean was born on August 2, 1932, to Harry and Corinne Creager in Mason City, Illinois. She was later adopted by Vernon and Ruth Dalzell (Sowers). She was a 1950 graduate of Mansfield Senior High and earned her BA and MA degrees in Elementary Education and Middle Childhood Education from The Ohio State University. She taught 6th grade in Mansfield City Schools for 30 years retiring in 1994.
On May 6, 1951 she married John F. McVicar and together they had 3 sons and celebrated 61 years of marriage before John passed away in 2012.
Jean was a member of First Christian Church, was on the Board of Diaconate, and an active member of Christian Women’s Ministries. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma society and the Richland County Retired Teachers Association. Jean loved quilting and shared that gift with many charities within the area. She enjoyed the challenge of making different designed quilts each time while making those gifts.
Jean is survived by son Richard L. McVicar of Mansfield, Ohio, son and daughter-in-law J. Malcolm and Julie McVicar of Lake Orion, Michigan, daughter-in-law Connie C. McVicar of Bethany, West Virginia. She is also survived by stepsisters Sherry Bennett and Pamela Cook. She leaves many nieces, nephews and many step grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, adopted parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Dr. Robert L. McVicar. She was also preceded by four brothers: Dean, Roderic, Father Robert, Fred Creager and sister Emalou Schmidgall.
Friends may call Monday, December, 9, 2024 in the Marion Avenue Chapel of Snyder Funeral Home (formerly Finefrock) from 9:30-11 am where her funeral service will be held beginning promptly at 11 am. Rev. David Zerby will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. McVicar’s memory may be made to First Christian Church or National Alliance Mental Illness (NAMI – Richland County).
