MANSFIELD — We’ve reached the regional quarterfinal round of the Ohio high school football playoffs, and north central Ohio is well represented.
Three Richland County teams, two Ashland County squads, two Knox County teams, and one squad each in Crawford and Morrow County are still alive.
Richland County
Lexington pulled off the biggest upset in north central Ohio last weekend, stunning fifth-seeded Maumee 28-14 for a rare road playoff victory.
The 12th-seeded Minutemen (6-5) will travel to No. 4-seed Rocky River (8-3) in a Division III, Region 10 game.
A couple of Richland County squads are slated to host Division IV, Region 14 games, and will play each other if both win.
Second-seeded Shelby came from behind to dismiss Elida 49-21 last week. The unbeaten Whippets (11-0) will host 10th-seeded Ottawa-Glandorf (6-5), which upended Galion 13-7 in the opening round.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Ontario (10-1), will host No. 6-seed Clyde (8-3). The Warriors held off a game Clear Fork squad 24-2 to advance out of the first round.
Ashland County
Ashland will put its undefeated season on the line against its toughest foe of the year.
The fourth-seeded Arrows (11-0) will host No. 5-seed Columbus DeSales (9-2) at Community Stadium. That will be a Division II, Region 7 matchup.
Like the Arrows, Hillsdale will also be at home in their Division VII, Region 25 second-round playoff encounter. Coach Trevor Cline’s second-seeded Falcons (10-1) will host No. 7-seed Windham (10-1).
Hillsdale triggered a running clock by hammering Fairport Harbor Harding 55-12 in the postseason opener.
Knox County
Centerburg scored 20 points in the final 8:41 to upset No. 7-seed Beaver Eastern 34-12 on Friday night. Miles Marshall led Centerburg with 108 yards in 22 carries, Blaine Ball added 15 carries for 103 yards and Chris Marshall eight for 80. Ball was 11-of-19 passing for 124 yards. Trevis Harris caught five for 52 yards, and Ballinger added two for 48.
The 10th-seeded Trojans (8-3) are poised for a rematch at second-seeded Northmor (11-0). Their first encounter was a thriller, with the Knights holding off the Trojans 34-26 on Sept. 13.
Meanwhile, Danville is the top seed in Division VII, Region 27. The Blue Devils manhandled Bridgeport 54-0 last week. Quarterback Jacob Hackman threw a career-high four touchdown passes and the defense limited the 16th-seeded Bulldogs to 60 yards of total offense.
Next up for Danville is No. 8-seed Portsmouth Notre Dame (6-5) at Tough Street Stadium.
Crawford County
Colonel Crawford is the lone survivor in Crawford County.
The ninth-seeded Eagles won perhaps Ohio’s most exciting playoff game in the opening round. C.C. quarterback Brayden Holt hit Kaden Bruner for a 6-yard TD strike, then added the game-winning, two-point conversion pass in the final minute to edge eighth-seeded Woodsfield Monroe Central 37-36 in a Division VI, Region 23 clash.
This week, Division VI, No. 9-seed Colonel Crawford (9-2) travels to top-seeded Grandview Heights (10-0)
