ONTARIO — The chase for the top spot in Region 14 is getting a little more interesting.
Undefeated Ontario and Shelby held firm at second and third, respectively, when the Ohio High School Athletic Association released its weekly regional computer ratings Tuesday.
The top 16 teams in each of the state’s 28 computer regions qualify for the playoffs.
The Warriors and Whippets both closed the gap on regional No. 1 Sandusky Perkins after the Pirates fell to Edison 15-14 last week. Perkins saw its points average advantage shrink from more than three points last week to less than a point this week. Perkins has an average of 17.8925, while Ontario is at 16.9786 and Shelby is at 15.2857.
The Warriors host Marion Harding (1-6) on Friday, while the Whippets visit Clear Fork (2-5). Ontario and Shelby meet at Shelby in Week 9.
Galion (4-3) stayed at No. 12 in Region 14 despite last week’s loss at Highland. The Tigers host Pleasant on Friday. Clear Fork moved into 16th after last week’s 14-13 win over Marion Harding.
In Region 10 of Division III, Lexington moved up two spots to No. 11 after last week’s 19-13 win over West Holmes. The Minutemen visit New Philadelphia (4-3) on Friday.
In Division VI, Region 22, Crestview is 20th after last week’s 34-0 win over Plymouth. The Cougars, who have won three straight, visit Norwalk St. Paul on Saturday.
Both Crestline (4-3) and Lucas (3-4) are in playoff contention in Division VII, Region 25. The Bulldogs are 10th and visit Hardin Northern (5-2) on Friday. Lucas is 16th and hosts North Central (2-5).
The top eight teams in each region are eligible to host a playoff game in the first round.
