Richard Trenas Mellor Jr. was born on January 18, 1947, in Millersburg, Ohio, to Dick and Joann Mellor. Known affectionately as R.T., Papa T, and Poo by his loved ones, he passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
Richard met his soulmate, MaryAnn Green, at just 10 years old in Lucas, Ohio while picking strawberries. R.T., the quintessential all-American boy, and MaryAnn, the spirited cheerleader, were meant for a lifetime of adventures together. They enjoyed cruising around town, ice-skating, having picnics under the willow tree, and bowling. They tied the knot on February 12, 1966, and continued their journey by exploring antique shops and garage sales, always on the lookout for treasures for their future shop. A huge fan of Ohio sports, Richard had a special place in his heart for the team that will forever be known to him as The Cleveland Indians.
He proudly called himself a “high-class hoarder,” with collections that included antique baseball gloves, fishing gear, and garden tools, reflecting his many hobbies and interests. Recently, he and MaryAnn had fun tracking down and repurchasing the birdhouses he had crafted and sold in the late ’90s, until he had to put away his woodworking tools in 2018.
Richard is survived by his wife MaryAnn Mellor, children, Jennifer (Joey) Cunningham and Richard Mellor III, grandchildren Jessica (Jamie) Heacock, Joshua (Ashley) Hinton, Xavier Mellor, Riley (Clay) Mellor, and Ryker King, great-grandchildren Amelia, Jaxson, Trenas, Lylah, Benjamin, Macy, Damian and Lainey, siblings Judy (Doug) Mitchell, Becky (Jim) Cowell, and Allen Mellor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son James Mellor, great-grandson Sooner Rai, and his beloved dog, Molly.
A celebration of Richard’s life will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at The Grace Church of Lexington, located at 218 West Main St, Lexington, Ohio, 44904. Calling hours will start at 10 am, followed by a small service and a celebration luncheon at 11 am. In honor of Richard, we invite friends and family to keep it laid-back and wear your favorite Ohio sports team apparel.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions to help with the unexpected expenses of this loss.
