If you like his words, maybe you will enjoy his voice.

After all, Richland Source City Editor Carl Hunnell has a great face for radio.

Richland Source is launching Hunnell’s new “News Man Weekly” podcast on Richland Source on June 25.

The weekly audio wizardry will air each Tuesday morning on the Source Daily podcast. Subscribe to the Source Daily Podcast and listen to Hunnell’s weekly episode every Tuesday wherever you find podcasts.

The idea is to talk about local news in Mansfield and Richland County. Hunnell will also have a guest join him in our podcast studio each week to take a peek behind the scenes of what’s making news.

Here is how the 63-year-old Hunnell describes his first real foray into something other than the printed word for the first time in a journalism career that began when Jimmy Carter was still the U.S. President and the Pittsburgh Pirates were winning the World Series.

Yep, a lifetime ago.

“Greetings and salutations, folks. My name is Carl Hunnell. I’m the city editor at Richland Source, and I’ve been a journalist longer than many of you have been alive.

“That’s okay. Hell, we all got to start somewhere. I started in 1979 at a small newspaper in southeast Ohio while I was still a student at Ohio University.

“News is what I do. So, welcome to The News Man Weekly. Every Tuesday, I’m going to share some of the biggest local news developments around Mansfield and Richland County on this show.

“I got some news you want to hear, and we’re going to start on Tuesday, June 25th. For the last five years at Richland Source, you’ve read my coverage of things like Mansfield City Council, other forms of city government, Richland County commissioners, community development, local politics, and even the occasional high school sports event. With this new podcast, I’m going to take you deeper than just words on an iPhone or your laptop screen.

“We’re going to take a look behind the headlines, maybe point out a few things that you or I missed along the way. We’ll take a deeper dive into what’s happening in the municipal building or the county courthouse. Maybe it’ll be a political issue or some campaign worth discussing.

“Or just maybe, it’ll be as simple as something I heard at Relax It’s Just Coffee that morning. Regardless, it’s gonna be something interesting, and it’s something I think you’re gonna want to hear. I’m also gonna have a guest in the studio to talk to each week.

“Somebody in the news or someone behind some of the stories that I’ve been covering. Trust me, I’m gonna ask the kind of questions that you would ask if you had the opportunity. Maybe an elected official, maybe an appointed public official, or maybe just somebody I think has a good story to tell.

“You see, that’s what I’ve been doing for a very long time now. Looking for cool stories to tell and talking to interesting people behind the news. If you have questions you’d like to see answered, feel free to email me at carl.hunnell@richlandsource.com.

“We’ll try to handle some of those each week also. If I can’t answer your question, I’ll find somebody who can.

“So that’s it.

“Join me each week for The News Man Weekly here at Richland Source. You can find the show on the Source Daily podcast every Tuesday. You can also stream these shows on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you find podcasts.

“Do that, and let’s see what news we can talk about together.”
