Rubies Women's Group is hosting a fundraiser during the month of June offering Mansfield and Ontario residents the opportunity to send a flock of plastic flamingos to a friend's yard.

MANSFIELD — Rubies Women’s Group, a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to helping women out of human trafficking and addiction struggles, is launching a special month-long fundraiser for June.

“Get Gemmed” is an opportunity for Mansfield and Ontario residents to support the nonprofit and have some fun with a neighbor or friend.

People will be able to “gem flock” a friend’s yard with between 10 and 31 flamingos depending on their donation levels. Residents can also purchase “insurance” to keep their yards from being gem flocked.

The plastic flamingos are about a foot tall and spray painted with gems.

The number 31 holds a special meaning for Rubies, as the organization was named for an excerpt from Proverbs 31, describing a woman of noble character as “worth far more than rubies.”

Ashley Thi, events coordinator for Rubies Women’s Group, said Rubies volunteers will transport the flamingos between homes and keep the flocks in a yard for about two days.

“We expect that if we get the word out, this could turn into a huge event for Mansfield and for Rubies,” she said.

Someone who has been “gem flocked” can donate $25 to Rubies to relocate the flock to a friend. Rubies volunteers plan to “flock” between three and five yards each day.

People can order a flock by scanning the QR code on the fliers below or visiting the form link directly.

Donors can also order a “You’re Flamazing” keychain to add to the flock. Thi said Rubies plans to make “Get Gemmed” an annual event.

The flocks are currently limited to the Mansfield and Ontario areas so volunteers can easily transport the flamingos.
