MANSFIELD — One person died and another was injured Friday morning during a house fire at 99 Dawson Ave., according to the Mansfield Fire Department.
The identity of the two victims had not been released late Friday morning.
Mansfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Sieving said a neighbor called 911 around 7:48 a.m. to report the blaze in the two-story house located west of Marion Avenue, north of Park Avenue West and south of Maple Street.
He said firefighters encountered one resident outside, who escaped from the house. That man reportedly told firefighters there was a second resident still inside.
Sieving said firefighters had to enter through the back door due to debris in the house. He said their efforts were slowed by a propane tank inside the house that was “engulfed and blowing flames across the back door.”
The man inside the house was found deceased, Sieving said. The injured man was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and then to a Columbus hospital, the assistant chief said.
The assistant chief said the department responded with all 22 on-duty personnel and called in off-duty firefighters to man other apparatus for the rest of the city as those on scene battled the blaze.
The fire was extinguished around 8:30 a.m., he said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, Sieving said.
