Members of Church Women United (CWU) gathered together at First English Lutheran Church on Friday afternoon in celebration of World Community Day.
World Community Day is an annual event organized by CWU. Members of CWU convened in the chapel to share how their personal churches have helped serve the community and then they all engaged in a time of worship and prayer.
Time was also allotted for the special guest, Doug Theaker, (star of two local television programs and retired director of Jobs and Family Services) to share his thoughts on the theme of this year’s World Community Day: “Walking through Doors of Opportunity.”
“With World Community Day, we are to ‘walk through the doors of opportunity,’ and so I wanted the whole group to know how our churches are walking through the doors of opportunity to help people here in the community,” explained CWU Vice President Charlene Arthur.
When discussing the theme of the event, Theaker stated, “Opportunity is favorable conditions. Opportunity could be a chance, a risk, but yet isn’t it interesting that rarely, rarely does a day go by that we don’t run into the word opportunity?”
Theaker then encouraged, “Really and truly, for something to happen, for that opportunity to become a condition or action, we’ve got to make it happen…God gave us that opportunity. The question is are we taking advantage of it, are we making things happen, and obviously this group is because I’ve heard how.”
He explained that there are several “opportunities” to serve in Mansfield and encouraged the members to keep up with their service to the community.
“There’s a great feeling among the women who came today. They were glad to be here and hear from Doug—he was such a good speaker because he is so knowledgeable about the whole community,” stated Arthur.
