MANSFIELD, Ohio – To no one’s surprise, the Force was strong with “Star Wars” last weekend, breaking nearly every major box office record imaginable.

According to a report from Forbes.com, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought in a galactic $247 million over the weekend — $9 million more than the original estimate. Either way, it is the biggest North American debut of all time.

Additionally, the seventh installment of the film brought in $281 million internationally – making the total gross $528 million in one weekend.

That hefty figure edges “Jurassic World” for biggest worldwide debut, and the film doesn’t open in China until next month.

To put that in perspective, in one weekend, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” already is the 96th biggest grossing movie of all time.

Richland County was no exception in showing its love of the franchise on opening weekend.

Carl Betts, of Shelby, told Richland Source on Facebook that he loved the movie.

“I will probably be watching it again soon,” he said.

Erin Jones, of Crestline, agreed, channeling her inner Yoda.

“Like it I think I do,” she said.

April Kunnas, of Ontario, didn’t just like the movie, however.

“I LOVED the movie,” she said.

The film was popular enough that even those who haven’t seen it were willing to share insight with Richland Source.

“(My) husband and brother saw it yesterday in 3D,” said Katrina Martin, of Crestline. “Loved it! I’ll probably watch it when hubby buys it.”

According to Forbes, the film’s audience was 58 percent male, 71 percent adults, 20 percent families, and 9 percent teens.

Early stats from this week continue to show the film putting up large numbers.

Cinemark 14 in Ontario has several viewings of the movie in both standard and 3D. Visit its website for more information.
