BRUNSWICK — The Rams are one win from state.

Kalie Blaising and Taylor Huff each had a goal and an assist as Madison blanked Rocky River 3-0 in the Division II regional semifinals Tuesday at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.

The Rams (16-1-4) will play for a regional championship against Oak Harbor on Saturday at a time and site to be determined. Oak Harbor beat Celina in a penalty kick shootout Tuesday in Findlay.

“Going into it we were just super confident. We just really wanted to play our best,” said Huff, the University of Tennessee recruit. “We remember last year (and) how hard it was when we lost in the regional semifinals against Bay.

“I think we played very well together.”

The Rams grabbed a 1-0 lead with 21:55 remaining in the first half when Blaising lofted a pass toward Phyllis Stanfield near the top of the box. Rocky River goal keeper Sabrina Rick left her line, but Stanfield headed the ball into the net as she and Rick collided.

Madison extended its lead to 2-0 when Blaising rocketed a shot past Rick off a pass from Huff.

“Taylor was right in my ear and she was like, ‘Shoot it,’ ” Blaising said. “I just shot it and … it fell.”

Leading 2-0 at the half, the Rams put it out of reach when Huff scored with 17:07 remaining in the match. Huff, Blaising and Kari Eckenwiler all had touches before Huff scorched a shot past Rick from about 15 yards out.

Keeper Morgan Rachel and the stingy Madison defense took care of the rest. Rachel, along with Julia Litt, Hannah Schmidt and Trinity Tucker posted their fourth shutout in five playoff games.

“They probably played the best they’ve played all year,” Madison coach Zac Huff said. “We told Julia to drop back a little bit and nothing over the top and win the first ball out of the air and … it worked well.”

Madison will play for the regional championship for the second time in three years Saturday. The Rams advanced to the Final Four in 2017.

“They’re a great team. We knew this coming into it,” Rocky River coach Patrick Hopkins said. “They’re one of the top-ranked teams in the state most of the season.

“Taylor is great on the ball and great off the ball and she’s got some girls that really support her. They work well together.”
