MANSFIELD – OhioHealth Hospital has partnered with the Mansfield Area Y to provide child care services for OhioHealth associates.

The Mansfield Area Y will open the new child care center at OhioHealth’s current child care location, 71 Carpenter Road in Mansfield. A transition date has not yet been determined.

“This was an excellent opportunity for us to partner with a highly reputable, community organization and childcare provider to continue care of our associates’ children while we focus on patient care,” said Theresa Roth, chief operating officer of OhioHealth Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals. “Children currently being cared for by OhioHealth will have first priority of continuing day care services at this location.”

The transition comes as part of a restructuring of 80 positions at OhioHealth Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals that was first announced in early November. Child care, linen and transcription departments at the hospital were announced to be transferred to outsourced partnerships, according to hospital president Jean Halpin.

“Over the last few years, as we really have invested in Richland County at both of our facilities in Mansfield and Shelby, our core business is patient care,” Halpin said in a Nov. 14 article. “By being able to take care of patients, we’ve done a lot of investment in programs and physicians and advanced clinical staff.”

Current OhioHealth child care workers are budgeted to remain working until June 30, 2017. According to OhioHealth human resources director, Rick Hoback, the health system employs 19 child care workers.

Roth stated in a Nov. 15 article that the child care’s current employees would be given the choice to work for the new organization.

The Carpenter Road facility, owned and operated by OhioHealth, has been subsidized by the hospital for several years. It cares for around 70 children each day, mostly children of Mansfield and Shelby associates and parents or children of the hospital. Some of the child care’s clients are also physicians who live within the community.

“Rates are based on a child’s age and frequency,” said Roth in a Nov. 15 article. “If a child attends all week, an OhioHealth associate would pay between $108 to $135 – based on the child’s age. Non-OhioHealth families were slightly higher, $117 to $144.”

The Carpenter Center will be the Mansfield Area Y’s fourth child care location. The Mansfield Area Y also offers child care in Ontario, Lexington and Mansfield on Scholl Road.

“We are excited that this opportunity will expand our services in the Mansfield area,” said Cristen Gilbert, president and chief operating officer at the Mansfield Area Y.

At its new Carpenter Center location, the Mansfield Area Y plans to expand services offered to children. New services will include before and after school care, preschool swim lessons and discounted Y memberships for households enrolled.
