MANSFIELD — Mansfield police late Tuesday morning were investigating a shooting death at Quality Inn & Suites, 500 N. Trimble Road.
Richland County Coroner Chief Investigator Bob Ball said the body of a 16-year-old male, whom he didn’t identify, was found inside a hallway on the ground floor of the hotel near U.S. 30.
“I can tell you it’s a shooting. I can tell you it’s a juvenile. That’s pretty much what I can tell you at this point,” Ball said he as left the hotel parking lot.
“He was shot several times.”
Mansfield police were called around 10:45 a.m. Ball said he was called at 11:16 a.m.
Mansfield police Chief Keith Porch issued a press release at 3:10 p.m., aksing the public for more information on the case.
“Major Crimes detectives are working to find out what led to the shooting death as well as to identify a suspect(s),” the press release said. “Details are very limited as this is an active and fluid investigation. Additional details will be released once they are available.”

Police taped off the entire parking lot of the hotel Tuesday morning, which is at the corner with McPherson Street. The tape was removed before 1 p.m., though police remained on the scene.
Ball said the body would be taken to Montgomery County on Wednesday for an autopsy.
