ASHLAND — Alex Depperschmidt drove to the basket and scored with 4 seconds remaining to cap a fourth-quarter rally that kept Lexington unbeaten after a thrilling, 55-53 Ohio Cardinal Conference win at Ashland on Friday night.
Depperschmidt’s bucket, his only two-point field goal of the night, helped the Minutemen (12-0 overall, 7-0 in the OCC) stay atop the conference standings. He finished with five points.
The back-and-forth affair included eight lead changes and eight ties. The Arrows led 12-10 after the first quarter, while Lex moved on top 28-23 at halftime. Ashland regained the advantage 36-34 heading to the final period.
Depperschmidt’s heroics overshadowed a 28-point outburst by the Arrows’ Grayson Steury. Keslar Bates chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, while Nathan Bernhard added five points and nine rebounds and Gabe Baith notched eight points for Ashland.
Lexington senior Baden Forup posted 16 points and six rebounds. Classmate Hudson Moore added nine points and 10 rebounds, Gavin Husty contributed nine points and freshman Brayden Fogle collected eight points and five rebounds.
The Minutemen outrebounded the hosts 29-24. Coach Scott Hamilton’s team outscored Ashland 16-1 on second-chance points and the Lex bench enjoyed a 14-2 scoring advantage.
The Arrows (4-11, 2-5) play at Ontario Saturday night.
Lexington will try to extend its best start to a season since 2015-16 on Sunday at 3 p.m. when it tangles with St. Marys Memorial in the Fort Loramie MLK Classic. The Roughriders are led by Austin Parks, a 6-foot-11 Ohio State recruit.
