GALION — The Galion City Health Department reported 1 person is in the hospital and there are no deaths from COVID-19 in the city.

In its latest report released on Tuesday night, Galion has reported 50 cases since the pandemic began with five hospitalizations, one remains in the hospital. Of that total, 42 are confirmed cases with eight falling under the probable case defnition. There are 46 recovered cases.

Those with COVID-19 include 26 women and 24 men. Two of the five who were hospitalized spent time in the Intensive Care Unit.

“Our public health staff have notified everyone that had been within six feet of contact with these cases for a duration of 15 minutes or more,” said Trish Factor, health commissioner. We wish all those affected by COVID-19 a speedy recovery.”

Galion had 1 case in March, 18 in April, 14 in May, 4 in June, 6 in July and 7 in August.

“Within Galion, we have identified two separate outbreak categories — associations with either congregate care (nursing homes or residential facilities) or correctional institutions (prison/jail),” Factor said. “Of our 50 total cases, five (10%) are associated with congregate care settings, 20 (40%) are associated with correctional institutions, and 25 (50%) acquired COVID-19 from other locations through community spread.”

Three of the 50 cases were asymptomatic in Galion.

“As businesses and schools re-open, please remember the virus has not left our area,” Factor said. “It is important to continue social distancing, washing your hands, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, cleaning frequently touched surfaces often, and staying home if you are not feeling well.”
