Right now, there are fields where the new Ontario Industrial Park will be built, and after attempts to lure in several businesses, Ontario announced today that a new Federal Express facility will be built in the industrial park, taking up a major portion of the land.
“There will be at least three more lots available in the industrial park,” said Mayor Hutchinson of the project. “FedEx hopes to break ground about the same time we break ground for the new roadway.”
Currently, there’s an access road that FedEx will be able to use for building while Urwin Parkway is being built into the park, named after former Mayor Robert Urwin. “There will be two main roads but we don’t have a name for the other one yet.”
Though it’s been reported that 150 jobs will be available at the new facility, most of those jobs will come from the FedEx Ground location currently located in Shelby. “That plant will close and those workers will come to the new facility,” said Hutchinson. “We’re not sure how many new workers will be hired above that, but their five-year plan is to expand, so there’s going to be more jobs coming.”
FedEx has outgrown their location in Shelby, which is why they were interested in finding a new and bigger location. “It doesn’t affect the Mansfield FedEx location,” said Hutchinson. “Only Shelby.”
According to a representative at FedEx corporate the company could not confirm employee movement until plans are finalized.
They hope to have the ground breaking of both Robert Urwin Parkway and the new FedEx location about the same time, once the ground thaws and construction can begin.
