Walking with someone to help them find their mission in life, assisting Ashland County residents who need a place to live, helping people in our community overcome the difficulty of an abusive relationship, helping families connect the dots between school and community resources, facilitating the growth of coping skills and resilience to overcome mental and emotional difficulties, tackling the trouble of substance abuse, and building a better and brighter Ashland County. This is the story and mission of Appleseed Community Mental Health Center.

At Appleseed, because of strong ties to our local business community, the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Ashland County Mental Health and Recovery Board, and our State Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services individuals connected to our Supported Employment program who want to find a job or career that fits their interests and skills are often able to do so.

This past year, Appleseed-supported employment specialists provided assistance in finding and keeping jobs for nearly 75 individuals.  It is possible they can help you too.

When individuals or families in Ashland County hit a rough spot in life and no longer have a place to stay, Appleseed housing specialists can help secure a safe and affordable place to live. Appleseed manages a number of housing grants that allows the agency to assist those who qualify to move out of crisis and into stability.

“Thank you for trying to help me and pointing me in the direction I need to go to get help with my utilities. It’s nice of you to care about others so much,” a resident said.

Staying in a relationship characterized by abuse because victims feel trapped happens all too often. Appleseed’s Safe Haven program stands ready to assist you to get out and grow strong enough to stand on your own.

We offer safe sheltering, advocacy, education, support groups, specialized counseling, a 24-hour hotline and other services to help you move forward in life. If you are in this situation, please reach out and let us give you the information you need to make the right decision for yourself.

“Before coming to Safe Haven I was a wreck,” said a community member said. “Safe Haven has helped me and my children get back on feet. I have a job and my kids are doing great.”

Through the support of the United Way of Ashland County, the Mohican Area Community Fund and many state and federal grants these services are offered at no charge to the individuals served.

“Safe Haven gave me another chance at life,” a resident said. “They helped me believe in myself and know that I am not what happened to me but instead I am whatever I choose to become.” 

Individuals receive support throughout the process gaining freedom from an abusive relationship.

“I was able to break free from my abusive relationship,” said one individual. “They helped me become more independent and get back on my feet. They have continued to be supportive and helpful for the five years I have been a part of the support group. My kids and I have come a long way with the help from Safe Haven. We are so appreciative for everything they have done.” 

The School-Community Liaison program is a partnership between Appleseed, the Ashland County Mental Health and Recovery Board, our city and county schools. Liaisons provide the support needed to help students and families be linked to the services in the community that can help them with their unique needs.

Over the 20-year history of the program, outcomes indicate that students who work with a liaison improve in achievement, attendance and overall positive behaviors.

Life is full of ups and downs. Often when we run into a time of struggle, we need someone to help us get back on track. Appleseed has a staff of professional psychiatrists, nurses, counselors, social workers, and case managers to help you get back to where you want to be.

Through the use of individual and family counseling, substance abuse counseling, groups for specific issues, medications, crisis intervention, safety planning, and other interventions, Appleseed can help you build resilience and manage life’s difficulties.

“You guys [Appleseed] have changed my child’s life and have helped my kids get better,” said a community member.” You have done a fantastic job supporting and fighting for us”.

The United Way of Ashland County and the Mohican Area Community Fund support our youth programs and help make them affordable for families in Ashland County.
