COLUMBUS — Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina) this week recognized the 2017 Division II Cross Country High School Boys and Girls state championship teams from Lexington High School.
The girls’ team ended the 2017 season with a 195-8 record, and the boys’ team finished the same season with a 228-15 record.
“I’m honored to recognize this remarkable group of young athletes,” Obhof said. “They have tremendous talent and team spirit, and even more importantly, they are respected by both peers and rivals for their good sportsmanship.”
Obhof also recognized the coach of both teams, Denise Benson, who was named the 2017 National Brooks Inspiring Coach of the Year award. Benson was nominated by student athletes and parents for her inspiring influence on the young people she coaches. A coach for 20 years, she has been with Lexington High School since 1999, producing a total of four state championships, five state runners-up and a total of 18 Ohio Cardinal Conference Championships.
“I admire Denise’s dedication to helping her students become not just better athletes but better people, and it is a privilege to recognize her today,” Obhof said.
