Yet again Richland County was under a Level 1 Snow Emergency on Sunday, Feb. 9. In the morning road conditions were icy and some vehicle accidents have been reported, but Richland Source staff hit the pavement to see for themselves. And Publisher Jay Allred took the time to talk to some residents about what they plan to do when the weather warms up.
Saturday evening snow began falling and locally accumulated two to three inches, but Sunday morning it was still snowing and an addition three to four inches accumulated.
The Mansfield Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that several accidents occurred throughout the county because of the heavy snowfall accumulation.
Telecommunicator with the Mansfield Police Department Lisa Abrams noted that, fortunately, none of the accidents resulted in injuries. However, there have been many cars that have lost control because of the snowy weather conditions. “The roads are slick, so drive slow,” she said.
Accidents were reported on all of the state routes within the county. “We’ve experienced several crashes,” said Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher Krystal Ross.
Conversely, Shelby Police Department dispatcher Amy Miller noted that Shelby has not encountered any reported accidents. “The main roads are just wet,” she said. “The side roads are still snow covered, though, and slippery in spots.”
Allred ventured out and spoke with some residents about what they plan to do when warmer weather arrives. Enjoying a beer on the patio was mentioned and another resident said she planned to take a nature hike.
“I think the first thing I’m going to do is sing a song, and dance. That’s the best thing I can think to do,” stated Glen Miller of Mansfield.
Residents will have to wait for those events, though. According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, snow flurries are possible tonight with a low around 8 degrees. The rest of the week looks like it will be alternately partly sunny and partly cloudy.
What does that mean?
One meteorologist described the two phrases as essentially the same: a mix of sun and clouds, though sometimes “partly cloudy” is used during the day to highlight a change from sunnier to cloudier skies. Regardless, it will be cold. The high Monday is forecast for 15 degrees and Thursday it may get up to 33 degrees.
