ONTARIO — An Ontario Police Department K-9 officer unexpectedly died Monday while being boarded at a professional trainer’s kennel, according to a social media post.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Ontario Police Department announces the sudden and unexpected passing of K-9 Ofc. Fender, a 9-year-old service dog,” the department said in a Facebook post.

The social media post said his handler, officer Jeremy Mohn, was away on vacation with his family at the time. The cause of death is unknown at this time, the department said.

“K-9 Fender was an invaluable member of the Ontario Police Department, serving alongside Officer Mohn with dedication, bravery, and distinction,” Assistant Chief Robert Griefenstine said.

“Throughout his career, Fender was a vital asset in keeping our community safe, providing exceptional service in the field, and acting as a beloved ambassador during department outreach events,” he said.

Fender joined the department in 2020, according to a Mansfield News Journal story at the time. He was to be trained in tracking and narcotics detection. The hire was made possible in part by $20,000 given by an anonymous donor to the Richland County Foundation, according to the story.

The department said “the bond between a K-9 and their handler is profound, extending far beyond the shift.”

“Fender was not only Officer Mohn’s partner on the street, but a deeply loved member of the Mohn family. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to Officer Mohn, his family, and our entire law enforcement community as we process this devastating loss,” Griefenstine said.

The assistant chief said Fender’s death is a “tragedy that impacts our entire department and the citizens of Ontario.”

“Fender served our city with honor, and his presence will be deeply missed. We are committed to supporting Officer Mohn and his family through this incredibly difficult time,” he said.

Information regarding memorial arrangements or department honors will be released as details are finalized.

Griefenstine said the Ontario Police Department respectfully requests privacy for officer Mohn and his family as they grieve the sudden loss of their partner and family member.
