Obituary for Mariann M. Eichler
Mariann M. Eichler, 81, of Mount Gilead, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 14, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived.
Born on July 25, 1944, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Mariann was adopted and lovingly raised by Albert Wolf and Marie Lippold. Following Albert’s passing, Mariann was also lovingly cared for by her mother’s best friend, Loreatha (Sipe) Thompson, and her husband, Bill Thompson, in Galion.
As a young girl, Mariann made a remarkable journey that she would proudly recount throughout her life. During the school year, she lived in Galion with Loreatha and Bill, attending school and building lifelong friendships. Each summer, she returned to Massachusetts to spend time with her mother. Traveling by bus between Massachusetts and Ohio, often on her own, fostered an independence and resilience that became defining qualities throughout her life. She graduated from Galion High School in 1962 and remained deeply connected to the community she called home.
Before dedicating herself fully to raising her family, Mariann worked as a nursing aide at Galion Community Hospital for five years, caring for others with the same compassion and gentleness that would become the hallmark of her life.
On September 19, 1965, she married the love of her life, James R. Eichler. Their story began at a wedding where Mariann served as maid of honor and James served as best man. Following a brief courtship and engagement, they were married just nine months later and shared 41 wonderful years together before James preceded her in death on March 14, 2006.
Though they approached life differently, they complemented one another perfectly. James was the family’s disciplinarian and careful budget keeper, while Mariann was easygoing, patient, and nurturing. Together they formed a partnership built on love, laughter, respect, and balance. Even years after James’ passing, Mariann delighted in sharing stories about him, keeping his memory alive through the countless moments they shared together.
Mariann devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, especially her two sons. She expressed her love through countless acts of service, sewing clothing for her boys, mending whatever needed repair, and spending hours shopping for fabrics and sewing supplies. She crocheted beautiful blankets that warmed both body and heart.
Her kitchen was the center of many cherished family memories. Mariann was known for her delicious stuffed peppers and macaroni salad, but every dinner was an occasion. Family meals featured a full spread, complete with dessert each evening. Texas sheet cakes, pies, and other sweet treats were staples, but cookies were her specialty. There always seemed to be an endless supply of homemade cookies waiting for family and friends.
When she wasn’t caring for others, Mariann enjoyed losing herself in a good romance novel. She also had a passion for shopping that went far beyond a casual pastime. For Mariann, shopping was an all-day event—a marathon that began with a hearty breakfast, continued through hours of browsing and bargain hunting with only brief stops for hydration, and concluded with dinner out to celebrate the day’s finds. She loved new clothes, took pride in dressing stylishly, and found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
She especially enjoyed dining out, with Red Lobster and Bob Evans among her favorite destinations. Family vacations and gatherings at the family place on Kelleys Island created some of her happiest memories. She loved being near the water and the beach, finding peace and happiness wherever she could hear the waves or watch the shoreline.
Mariann had a remarkable gift for loving others with her whole heart. She was endlessly giving, deeply caring, and selfless to a fault. She rarely complained and would go to great lengths to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. Her kindness, grace, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She also cherished her beloved dog, Princess, enjoyed cheese in almost any form, never turned down a McDonald’s unsweet tea or a Coke Zero, and found joy in the little things that made life sweet.
Above all else, Mariann loved her family. They were the center of her world, and she devoted her life to caring for them, supporting them, and celebrating them. In return, she was deeply loved and adored by those who knew her best.
Mariann’s legacy is one of unwavering love, quiet strength, kindness, and devotion. Her family will forever treasure the memories she created, the lessons she taught through example, and the love she gave so freely. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law Chris and Debbie Eichler of Galion, and Jeremy and Kristin Eichler of Mount Gilead, 9 grandchildren Christin Eichler, James Eichler, Joey Delauder, Megan Delauder, Carter Eichler, Brennen and Jazmen Finfgeld, Olivia Finfgeld, Taylor Fingfeld, and Sophia Jacobs, and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Sarah Eichler.
Mariann is preceded in death by her husband James Eichler, brother-in-law Herb Harden and sister-in-law Norma Harden.
