Peggy I. Cox, age 84 of Shelby, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Avita Health System – Ontario. She was born on July 15, 1942, in Beckley, West Virginia, to the late Louis P. and Birdie (Workman) Gomez, and on March 24, 1958, she married the love of her life, Emel J. Cox.
Peggy is fondly remembered as a strong, opinionated, and spicy woman who stood by her word and wouldn’t hesitate to let you know it, but she was as loving as she was fierce. Her family was very important to her, as was her beloved cat, Samson. Peggy enjoyed thrifting and going to garage sales, and in her younger days, she had a talent for crocheting and sewing. All of her family members have afghans that she made for them, and all of the girls got fancy dresses from her over the years. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her daughters Jackie (Ralph) Henski and Cheryl (Mike) Rachel; her brothers Robert Gomez and James Gomez; her grandchildren Summer, Zach, Amber, and Joely; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Emel Cox, her parents Louis and Birdie Gomez, her son Tommy Joe Cox, and her siblings Betty McDaniels, Anna Garzia, Delores Sotres, Joe Gomez, and Carlos Gomez.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield. Services will take place at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mansfield Cemetery.
