SHELBY — The Shelby Foundation welcomed community members into two of its downtown buildings during Shelby Bicycle Days, giving many their first opportunity to see the progress being made as the historic properties are restored.
Visitors toured the buildings, learned about the project, asked questions, and shared ideas for the future of downtown Shelby.
Conversations reflected appreciation for the restoration efforts and excitement about new possibilities, with suggestions including a bookstore, antique shop, spa, and other locally owned businesses.
The Foundation has invested more than $2.1 million in acquiring and restoring downtown properties as part of its long-term commitment to preserving Shelby’s Historic District and supporting future economic growth.
One visitor summed up the weekend by saying, “I’m just excited that people are investing in Shelby.
Things are finally moving. I think it’s neat that storefronts are being utilized again. I just hope it all comes to fruition.”
“Our goal was to open the doors and invite the community into the conversation,” said Carrie Kemerer, executive director of The Shelby Foundation. “The stories, ideas, and enthusiasm we heard reaffirmed that these buildings are an important part of Shelby’s pas — and an exciting part of its future.”
The Foundation thanks everyone who attended the open house and shared their ideas. Restoration work continues, with updates available at www.theshelbyfoundation.org.
