“Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame, wake up the echoes cheering her name…”

For James D. Conn, those words were more than a fight song. They were a Saturday tradition, a lifelong passion, and a reflection of the loyalty and pride that defined the way he lived his life.

James D. Conn, 53, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly Monday evening, June 15, 2026, in Knox Community Hospital following complications from a heart attack.

Born August 7, 1972, in Mansfield, James graduated from Clear Fork High School in 1990, proudly wearing the Colts uniform as a member of the football and track teams. It was at the Bellville Fair in 1996 that he began dating Michelle “Shelly’ Flynn and just 1 year later the two were married on September 22, 1997.

A proud American patriot, James honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. The discipline and dedication he developed during his military service remained with him throughout his life. Following his discharge, he built a career defined by reliability and hard work. He worked for Jackson Geothermal for 18 years, MANCI for five years, and was currently serving with the Ohio Department of Transportation in Knox County.

Although Ohio was always home, James’s heart belonged to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Fall Saturdays were reserved for Irish football, whether from his favorite chair at home or from the stands in South Bend cheering on the Blue and Gold.

James appreciated life’s simple pleasures. An easy day spent fishing was a good day. He rarely missed a NASCAR race and faithfully cheered for Dale Earnhardt Jr. A devoted student of history, he loved learning about the people and events that shaped the world.

One of his most treasured adventures was traveling to England to visit his son while stationed in the military. During that trip, James and Shelly visited the beaches of Normandy, a profoundly meaningful experience for a man who deeply respected the sacrifices of those who served before him.

Those who knew James understood that behind his larger-than-life personality was an even larger heart. Nicknamed “The Intimidator” he was fiercely protective of the people he loved. He worked hard, laughed loudly, and never missed an opportunity to share a joke. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving Pap whose greatest joy came from his family. He adored his grandson and eagerly anticipated the opportunity to hold and spoil his granddaughter.

James leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 29 years, Michelle “Shelly” Conn of Mansfield; his children, Rebecca (Matthew) Frazier of Mansfield and Jacob (Skye) Conn of Delaware; his cherished grandchildren, Brody Frazier and Kinsley Frazier; his father, Donald (Phyllis) Conn of Florida; his stepbrother, Jason (Lucky) Walters of Florida; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tommy and Rebecca Flynn of Bellville; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends who will miss his laugh, his stories, and his unwavering presence.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. His memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Patrick Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Bellville American Legion Post #535.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bellville American Legion Post #535.

Though the echoes of his laughter may have quieted, the memories he created and the love he gave will continue to cheer his name for generations to come.
