Prattville, AL – Katherine “Kate” Marie (Schuller) Dettmer, 38, originally of Mansfield, Ohio, died on May 25, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She left behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication to others.

Kate was born to Richard and Susan (Messenheimer) Schuller of Mansfield, Ohio, on October 30, 1987. Kate was a proud 2006 graduate of Ontario High School in Ontario, Ohio. She continued her education at Tiffin University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology, and later received her master’s degree in social work from University of Kansas.

On June 15, 2013, Kate married Andrew “Andy” Dettmer, originally of Lakewood, Ohio. A proud military spouse, Kate supported her husband throughout his service in the United States Coast Guard. Together they created a loving family of three children and a home filled with resilience, laughter, and deep care. Her love for her children was fierce and boundless, and she instilled in them the same passion and empathy that defined her own life.

Kate built a meaningful career devoted to helping others, most recently serving as the Director of Housing at Abode Services, an organization committed to providing permanent housing solutions for the unsheltered. In 2020, she played a critical leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding a team of Abode employees in partnership with state and Alameda County officials as part of Project Roomkey and Homekey—efforts that rapidly rehoused vulnerable populations and provided life-saving stability during an unprecedented time.

Kate approached life with intensity, purpose, and heart. Whether in her professional calling, her role as a mother, or her relationships with family and friends, she lived fiercely and passionately, always striving to make the world better for those around her. Above all, Kate was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, and friend.

She is survived by her husband, Andy, and their three cherished children: Josephine (11), Elias (7), Willa (3), and her Sadie-girl; her parents, Richard and Susan Schuller; her brother Kyle Schuller of New York City; her in-laws Herb and Becky (Rader) Dettmer of Bowling Green, Ohio; her sister-in-law Katie (Dettmer) and husband, Ben Mueller, her nieces Abby and Christina Oswald, all of Lavonia, Michigan; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; especially her Muffin Wallopers.

Kate was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, among them Grandma Annie Schuller; and her treasured – and grumpy – dog, Dawson. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives she touched.
