Jo Ann Bland, 96, of Galion passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Galion Meadows Nursing Home.

Jo Ann was born in Shelby, on September 2, 1929, to the late Russell and Alta (Billman) Roberts. On February 3, 1947, to the late Richard L. Bland, and he preceded her in death on December 15, 2005.

A woman of simple joys, strong convictions, and unforgettable quirks, Jo Ann lived a life centered around the people she loved most, her husband Richard, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Family was her world, and she treasured every moment spent together.

Jo Ann found happiness in life’s little pleasures. She loved sitting down with crossword puzzles and word searches, trying her luck with her favorite $2 bingo scratch-off lottery tickets, and playing cards, especially a good game of euchre. She was known for her sense of humor and the many stories that became legendary within the family over the years.

Among those stories were her deep fear of flying saucers and storms. During bad weather, Jo Ann would usher the children into a tiny closet for safety, while Richard calmly remained in the living room watching television. Another unforgettable family memory was the famous Lake Erie boat trip, when after the boat struck submerged wood, Jo Ann simply climbed out and walked by herself to the dock.

Jo Ann approached life in her own unique way. She never learned to drive, never had to write a check, and never even cashed one. Her claim that her arms and legs were the same length, would be verified by the tape measure, and just added to the lore that was Jo Ann.

Jo Ann’s memories will be cherished by her daughter: Diane Pearson of Galion; grandchildren: Andy Lewis of Marion, Jodi Lewis of Galion, and Richard (Jason Jacquzzi) Lewis of Towson, MD.; 4 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jo Ann was proceeded in death by her great-grandson, Mark Harney, and her 12 siblings.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Shelby Community and Senior Center, in care of the funeral home.

A graveside service celebrating Jo Ann’s life at Greenlawn Cemetery in Crestline will be announced at a later date.
